I picked it for myself,

I chose this fate—

I watched my lips burn and took the loneliness

and the song and the sweat,

I grabbed it, I grabbed it—

I was there, I traded love for music.

Wine

Now that I finally understand what it means

to walk wine-less and with sunburned feet through the pages

of my life, I know with my mouth and my eyes

that I have not died—I have just lived a little.

Esteem

Ephraim’s envy shall cease, Isaiah says,

once the wolf dwells with the lamb:

And I take that as saying that jealousy’s

here to stay, that’s why it’s all over

the Ten Commandments, and as I sit

with you at lunch in the little city

I now call home and look at your big

green eyes, the lusciousness of your beard,

the muscles just below your shoulders,

I wonder how you can be envious

of anything, with all that beauty.

I look at you and wonder if love is only

envy accelerated, mutual esteem

amped to the grab of lust, the desire

to possess what beauty another has, to ally

not with the lamb, but the growling wolf.
